Gypsy of the Blues, Eddie Kirkland passes awayOne of the last of the original bluesmen, Eddie Kirkland is no more. He died in a Tampa, Florida hospital, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Feb. 27. Jamaican-born Eddie Kirkland was one of the most mysterious and unique musicians, who spent much of the past 50 years touring and performing his original brand of soul infused blues .

Kirkland performed with some of the greatest names in Blues and Soul, including John Lee Hooker and Otis Redding and cut albums with artists such as King Curtis and Sonny Landreth. His rigorous touring schedule earned him the nickname “Gypsy of the Blues”. His many albums include “It’s the Blues Man!”, “Have Mercy” and “Democrat Blues”.

Kirkland was renowned for this impassioned singing, wailing guitar lines, vibrant stage presence and boundless energy. He was quite an acrobat on stage. During one of his performances with the British band Foghat he did a back somersault while continuing to play the guitar.
