IIFA Awards to Include Music Workshop
This year’s International Indian Film Academy Awards are taking place in Toronto, Canada, through June 25. For the first time, the event will include an IIFA Music Workshop which aims at showcasing the role music plays in Indian films. Open to music students and professionals from across North America, the workshop also will attempt to establish a platform for Indian and international musicians and industry professionals to interact and share ideas.
The workshop will take place on Saturday, June 25, the same day as the awards ceremony. The workshop will feature an interactive session with acclaimed Bollywood music directors Vishal Bhardwaj, Salim Merchant and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Besides showcasing the history Indian film music, one of the highlights of the workshop will involve Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy using audience participation to compose and perform a song on the spot.

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs Partners with Karaoke Website
Musical reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs has partnered with the karaoke website Singchana.com, to allow users to match renditions of songs against the pitch of original songs.
Aspiring, young singers can sing their favorite karaoke tracks, practice singing, and challenge friends online on Twitter and Facebook to beat their score. The website takes players’ voices and coverts them into visual representations that can be compared to the original singer’s voice.
“Karaoke can be fun at any age and it always brings with it elements of zest, freshness and zing,” said Akash Chawla, marketing head of Zee, which carries Sa Re Ga Ma Pa shows. “Our show’s popularity on YouTube has been humongous. The count has crossed 2,86,680 hits since two weeks of its launch. This validates our efforts in presenting pure musical talent rather than resorting to gimmicks.”
Radio Mantra Celebrates RD Burman
Radio Mantra has kicked off celebrations to commemorate late music composer RD Burman’s 72nd birth anniversary.
“It’s an exclusive treat that Mantra is giving out to its listeners as somewhere all of us have grown up humming the tunes of the phenomenal composer,” said Sameer Kanwar, national programming head of Radio Mantra.
The station has been playing popular hits of RD Burman under the Salaam-E-Pancham music segment, and has organized shows to commemorate the composer and his memorable works. Their segment “RD Hat-Trick” featured three evergreen Burman songs played each hour as well as a “Mera Wala Hit” daily request show playing his most popular songs. There was also an “Action Replay” segment which featured Burman and singer Asha Bhonsle’s bet musical moments, as well as a “Ticket to Bollywood” show that discussed Burman’s influence on Bollywood music.
Reverrse Polarity Drummer Jonathan Joshua Fernandes Dies
Metal band Reverrse Polarity lost their drummer Jonathan Joshua Fernandes over the weekend in an unfortunate accident.
Over the last year, Fernandes had taken time off from the band to train as a pilot in the United States. He was in Delhi over the weekend to take his pilot’s license exam.
Reverrse Polarity won Channel V’s Launchpad competition in 2009, coming out of nowhere to beat more experienced bands like Cassini’s Division and Faridkot. The five-piece metal band came together in late 2008 and quickly built up a dedicated following amongst indie metal fans across the country. The band toured the country on the back of the Launchpad win and had even snared their own Rolling Stone magazine cover, a rare and prestigious accolade for an Indian band.
‘Bhaag DK Bose’ Gets Covered Indie Style
Ram Sampath’s cheeky expletive-hidden “Bhaag DK Bose” song is already a summer superhit that’s on the lips of millions across the country. The song has now crossed over into indie-cool territory with a cover from Mumbai-based composer and producer Sonaluna, who sprinkles the song with her own brand of ambient-electro fairy-dust to produce one of the coolest covers in recent times.
According to Sonaluna’s post on her blog One Small Window (which she shares with indie film-maker Elvis D’silva), “The song ‘Bhaag DK Bose’ from the film Delhi Belly is a superhit or, in Bollywood parlance, “souprhit”. Say it fast and as if it were one word – “souprhit, souprhit!!!” Yup that’s kind of the excitement that surrounds this massive song, and after it was stuck in my head in a constant loop, I just had to cover it.”
